Vasari hotel is born from the restructuring of the ancient monastery of S.Antonio from Vienne, built in the second half of 16th century, that belonged to the so-called “Friars of the fire”. These friars had the Tau as their symbol, represented in the coat-of-arms of the order with which the pertaining rooms to it were marked. Testimony is still found in the arch of access to the inner courtyard, now used as parking.
After the abolition of the order, happened in 1775, the entire property of the friars was divided and sold. One of the purchasers was the famous French poet Alfonse De Lamartine whom, in 19th century, acquired and lived in the palace before selling it to the noble family “Strozzi”.
In the past century the structure has resumed its function of welcoming place of residence, no more for pilgrims in travel towards the holy places, but for travellers and tourists at the discovery of the beauties of the city. The hotel maintains still the magic of its past. The vaulted ceilings, characterizing the common areas at the reception floor, testimony the original destination to monastery of the structure. The sandstone fireplace, in the large breakfasts room, once the refectory of the monastery, date back to the 16th century and represents one of the little decorative elements of the austere original structure. In the 19th century the palace was embellished with lively frescoes, examples of which are still found in the main hall.
